Mobility and transport
Mobility aids and equipment
Borrowing, hiring and buying mobility aids and daily living equipment, and how to make sure it is right for you.
Borrowing equipment
Councils and the NHS lend equipment such as walking frames, bath seats, raised toilet seats and hospital beds, usually after an assessment by an occupational therapist or another professional. Ask your GP, hospital team or council adult social care team.
Hiring for a short time
Short-term hire can help after an operation, during a visit or for a holiday. Check what is included: delivery, collection, servicing and what happens if something breaks.
Buying equipment
- Try before you buy where you can. Some suppliers have showrooms.
- If you have a long term illness or disability, you may not have to pay VAT on some equipment. Ask the supplier about VAT relief.
- For larger items such as stairlifts or riser beds, get an OT assessment first.
Staying safe
Ask for equipment to be fitted and adjusted to you. If something no longer feels safe or your needs change, ask for a review.
